Pregnancy, subsequent weight loss, and breastfeeding can have dramatic effects on the appearance of the breasts. New moms often experience sagginess and excess skin in the breasts, making them feel older than they are. Mommy Makeover procedures from our Reno plastic surgeon, Dr. Tiffany McCormack, often include breast lift surgery—a commonly performed procedure that can give the breasts a firmer, “perky” appearance. Based on the specific needs and goals of each individual, Dr. McCormack can customize the breast lift treatment to achieve a more youthful breast contour and elevation with exceptionally natural-looking results.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Lift Surgery?

Also referred to as mastopexy, breast lift surgery can provide numerous benefits for women seeking to rejuvenate the contour and projection of their breasts. Depending on your unique needs and aesthetic desires, mastopexy may be able to help:

  • Eliminate breast sagging/drooping caused by excess skin and tissue
  • Lift the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest
  • Enhance the overall shape and/or symmetry of the breasts
  • Raise the nipple-areolar complexes to a more natural position
  • Reduce the areolas to a more proportionate size
  • Improve the fit of certain tops, bras, and swimsuits

As an added benefit, breast lift surgery can often be performed in conjunction with breast augmentation for individuals interested in increasing the volume of their breasts in addition to addressing drooping and/or sagging. By combining breast implants with mastopexy, qualified patients can further enhance the volume, contour, and overall appearance of their breasts.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Breast Lift?

Mastopexy can be an excellent option for women desiring to:

  • Correct excessive drooping and/or sagging in the breasts
  • Elevate the breasts for a “perkier” appearance
  • Resize and/or reposition the nipple-areolar complexes
  • Promote a more youthful breast contour without adding significant volume.

For individuals who wish to increase the size of their breasts in addition to achieving one or more of the enhancements above, combining the mastopexy procedure with breast augmentation may be necessary. While it can help create an improved breast shape, breast lift surgery alone is not able to significantly enlarge the breasts. Only by placing breast implants can a notable increase in volume be attained.

Additional criteria for breast lift candidacy includes being a non-smoker (or stopping at least two weeks before surgery with no plans to resume), being in good general health, and having a complete understanding of what can realistically be achieved. In most cases, Dr. McCormack also recommends that patients be finished growing their families before undergoing mastopexy, as subsequent pregnancies may negatively impact the results of treatment.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery is a way of addressing breast sagging and drooping that can occur after having children. Dr. McCormack can eliminate excess skin and reposition the breasts and nipples so that they appear more rounded and youthful.

During breast lift surgery, the exact placement of incisions will depend on each patient. Dr. McCormack will discuss the various techniques with you at your initial consultation and decide upon the best approach for your needs. She is highly adept at performing breast lift procedures in such a way that any residual scarring can be easily hidden by a bra or bathing suit. After the incisions have been made, Dr. McCormack will remove excess skin and tighten the remainder, reshaping the breasts and relocating the nipples to a higher position.

The procedure typically lasts about two hours or less under general anesthesia, and it can be combined with other aesthetic enhancement options for a more complete Mommy Makeover.

Total recovery times will depend on the number of procedures you undergo in your Mommy Makeover; however, with breast lift alone, patients can expect to return to normal daily routines one to two weeks after surgery. Some bruising and swelling will likely be present for about two to three weeks. Pain and discomfort during recovery can be alleviated with medication. Dr. McCormack advises patients not to engage in strenuous activities for a few weeks after breast lift surgery so that the breasts have ample time to heal.
